How do you rate a book you can't finish? Pondering thought...

“It is better to read a little and ponder a lot than to read a lot and ponder a little." quote by Denis Parsons Burkitt

I was wondering blogging friends, how do you rate books you do not finish? You don't like the characters, execution of story is bad, your bored, whatever your reason is, how do you rate it? 1 star, half a star or no rating at all?

And do you write a review about why you gave up on the book?

Thanks for visiting Tea Time with Marce and commenting, I appreciate it.

  1. Good Question.

Depends on how far I get into the book before giving up. If I get half way then I will rate it but if I give up by the third chapter then I will not give it a rating.

  2. I rate the book 1 star on sites like Goodreads and LibraryThing, but I don't review it. I leave a note in my Monday What Are You Reading Post about quitting the book. I've only had to do this once so far. I hated Ulysses.

  4. I do still write a review, I'll try to say what I did like, and will explain why I didn't read it. I usually give it a lower rating.

  5. I rarely quit on a book and haven't at all since I started blogging, so I haven't had to face this yet.

  6. I had 3 last year, I am going to be consistent and rate them 1 star. I also think I will write a small review at least stating why. There are WAY to many books out there to force myself to read something I don't enjoy, I won't do it.

    Thanks for commenting everyone.

  7. For me, it depends on how far I got in the book. Usually I give a book 50 to 100 pages before giving up, and I only give up when I'm really forcing myself to continue reading. I usually rate these books 1 star. Actually, I'm posting my thoughts on a book I couldn't finish later today. This is only my second DNF post in almost 3 years of blogging.

  8. I don't rate books I don't finish. I think it's okay to say that you didn't finish and say why, but it doesn't seem fair to rate something you didn't finish - it's more like an incomplete :)

  9. I've never given up on a book yet! Probably I've been lucky so far not to have come across a particularly annoying or boring book. But I'm wondering too, what I would do in such a situation - probably give a review only on what I felt reading the book and why I had to give it up?

  10. Hmm, this is tough. I'd probably write up a small review explaining why I didn't want to finish.

  11. My blog is so new, I haven't come across this on there yet. On GoodReads, I give it one star and briefly explain why I couldn't finish it. I did just give up on a book my aunt loaned me, and I just chickened out on that and left it unrated and unreviewed. I didn't want to hurt her feelings. :-)

  12. I abandoned like 20 books last year, so who knows how many I will drop this year?

I am going to leave it as no-rating, but will give a "review" to explain why I can't finish it, so people can judge for themselves - my reasons for abandoning it may well be the reason why someone else likes the book.

  13. Interesting discussion. Thus far, I've felt like I needed to finish a book before I could fairly rate and review it.

  14. Hi!
I have only had one book that I couldn't finish. I didn't review it, but gave my reason for not liking the book. I was peeking at your Suspense & Thriller list. I'm in the challenge too. The Manufactured Identity, I have read that and reviewed. Great book! I have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my TBR list. Thanks for stopping by my place, Just Books. Have a great weekend.
