What are you Reading - Personal Update

It's Monday, What are You Reading.  Sheila over at One Persons Journey has an incentive for networking so go over and have fun while adding to your 2011 Wishlist.

I just completed

Currently Reading 2 books due to personal events, see below.

  and

So friends, I am dealing with a very scary situation, first in my life.  My 45 year old brother had a massive stroke and we were told he may not survive.  This was on Tues.  Due to the pressure in his head he was unable to fly.  He was air ambulanced to Boston on Friday night and I flew out on Saturday to be with my nephew and niece with him.  It is a day to day scary situation.  He is breathing on his own but unresponsive to us.  He doesn't have feeling in his left side.  If we say something and tell him wiggle his toes he will.  Please send best wishes and prayers.

This is why I haven't been blogging all week.  And sharing a computer with an 18 and 24 year old, well i'm sure you can imagine.

I love to read one book at a time but I am so unfocused but these 2 seem to be working so far.

HUGS

  1. Marce- I am SO sorry to hear about your brother. I will make sure and keep him and your family in my prayers. As to the books you are reading, I've read and enjoyed both. Speak is an absolutely amazing read in my opinion. I didn't love All The Pretty Girls but I did end up liking it when I finished. You'll be in my thoughts.

  11. I am so sorry to hear the sad news :( {{{{hugs}}}} I was wondering why you haven't posted as frequently as you normally do. All the best to you and your family.

I take it's a good sign that he can wiggle his toes? It is probably very scary for him too - especially if he can hear you, but can't respond like he could before. I don't know if it helps or not, but I had read "My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey" by Jill Bolte Taylor - she is a brain scientist who had a stroke herself and is in recovery, and I remember there is an appendix at the back of that book that helped care givers to communicate with stroke survivors ("Forty Things I Need the Most"). I don't remember all of it, but I googled and one tip that I was thinking of:

"Ask me multiple-choice questions. Avoid Yes/No questions"

So not sure if it'd help to communicate with your brother this way instead? She had explained in the book why it was easier to answer multiple choice, something about how her thought processes works but I forgot the details.

Please take care of yourself too.

  12. Forgot to say, I'd read All the Pretty Girl about 2 years ago. I don't remember much about it now, but I remember liking it fine when I read it - I am not too concerned about not remember the details, this genre is my fluff books, I enjoy it while i read it, but I don't mind too much if I don't remember what happened...

  14. Oh Marce, I am so sorry about this. Like Christa said, it's probably a good thing that he can wiggle his toes. Also, doctors will give you the worst picture - they would rarely say that it looks good, thanks to all the legal consequences of saying something nice and making the family feel better. When my brother was in hospital, the docs told me that he could be slow and his abilities affected. But that didn't happen - he got back 100% of his abilities! I pray the same for your brother - I know how hard this is, but keep your strength. ((((HUGS))))

  15. Christa, thank you, I downloaded it on my Kindle, I will read the 40 things to my niece and nephew today so we can start communicating differently, I appreciate it. And that can go towards my memoir challenge.

Friends thanks again for the support, hugs, prayers etc, it truly is appreciated and needed.

Aths, I am so happy to hear your brother has recover 100% that is incredible. :-)
