Welcome to Tea Time with Marce

The Thrill Ride Questionnaire

What is your favourite genre out of Thriller, Mystery, Suspense and Horror? Why?

Thriller is my favourite, specifically Psychological Thrillers, the ones that mess with your mind while keeping you on the edge of your seat and awake far past your bedtime.

I would love to become a Profiling Detective (just a wish, not reality)  trying to figure out who the killer or character really is and why they are etc.

Who are your top 3 authors?

Mary Higgins Clark - I have always loved her, she has been my go to author for over 15 years.

Andrea Kane - After reading Twisted I was impressed and have enjoyed 3 more by her.

Dan Wells - He gave a little of everything in his trilogy, horror, mystery, psychological thriller, suspense, I am a fan for life.

Tell us who your favourite male and female authors are in the genre?

For Thrillers I will say:

Andrea Kane and Vincent Zandri

What book do you remember loving but don't remember the details? Maybe you should read it again now.

The Master of the Game by Sidney Sheldon

First published in hardback format in 1982. Spanning six generations in the lives of the fictional MacGregor/Blackwell family, the critically acclaimed novel debuted at number one on the New York Times Bestseller List.

What has been your favourite this year so far:

Thriller - So Close to the Hand of Death by J T Ellison

Mystery - Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan

Suspense - The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen

Horror - Dan Wells trilogy, I am not a Serial Killer, Mr. Monster and I Don't want to Kill You

What series or trilogy would you recommend in these genres?

Thriller - Jean Holloway

Start with Ace of Hearts - my review

Mystery - Alan Bradley - mainly for character

Start with The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie - my review

Suspense - Tess Gerritsen

Start with the Surgeon - my Review

Horror - Dan Wells trilogy

Start with I am not a Serial Killer - my review

Recommend 1 or 2 books that you think more around the blogosphere should read.

Harry Dolan - Bad Things Happen - my review.  I really think bloggers will be fascinated with this one.  Writers and Editors are the victims and suspects.

What authors have you tried and look forward to reading more from them? Maybe we can give you suggestions on what to read from them.

Nicci French
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

What authors in the above genres are on your TBR list but you haven't tried yet?  Who should I read soon?

Harlan Coben, Tami Hoag, Gregg Olsen, Jo Nesbo and Lisa Gardner

Post your link here, thanks for participating.

Review - Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster

Book Summary from Amazon

Jen Lancaster was living the sweet life-until real life kicked her to the curb.

She had the perfect man, the perfect job-hell, she had the perfect life-and there was no reason to think it wouldn't last. Or maybe there was, but Jen Lancaster was too busy being manicured, pedicured, highlighted, and generally adored to notice.

This is the smart-mouthed, soul-searching story of a woman trying to figure out what happens next when she's gone from six figures to unemployment checks and she stops to reconsider some of the less-than-rosy attitudes and values she thought she'd never have to answer for when times were good.

Filled with caustic wit and unusual insight, it's a rollicking read as speedy and unpredictable as the trajectory of a burst balloon.

My Review - 2 1/2 Not my Cup of Tea

I really wanted to enjoy this one, when I find humor I love, seriously I cannot get enough and would have had to stop reading to control myself, well this failed the funny department, more like hitting my funny bone, which HURTS.

I downloaded the sample and was laughing, thought ok I will like this, BAD DECISION. JenL is not likable in my opinion and as a memoir it is hard to read a book by someone that is conceited, bitchy, stuck up, bratty, has no class and doesn't learn from mistakes.  I have to give it to her for finding someone to give her the opportunity to write and then make money from it.

So for all the bloggers out there and Facebook users that put all their life on it, you may just get the opportunity to write your memoir.

One main thing from the book though, she is true to herself, knows who she is and is not apologetic for it at all.  The title - Confessions of a condescending (Yes), egomaniacal (Yes), self-centered Smart-ass (Double Yes), or why you should never carry a Prada Bag to the unemployment office, (Seriously, sigh).  She is all of that and more.

The parts I thought were funny was me laughing at her, which is sad.  She is an absolute disgusting drunk also, never nice to see/read.  (She may not be a drunk anymore, this was written in 2006)

This really was not my cup of tea at all.  It took me 2 months to read, a little here and there until finally i'm done.

I wanted to read this one after Steph (StephtheBookworm) said she loves Jen and this is one of her favorite books.  If JenL is funny to you, you will love it.  Maybe go to her blog and have a peek, which I didn't but here it is.  www.jennyslvania.com

At least I get to put this towards my Memoir challenge.  I really want to try different memoirs this year, I find them a hit or miss so far.

Review - Someone Else's Son by Sam Hayes

Summary of Book from Amazon.uk

A tense and powerful emotional thriller from Sam Hayes that asks: Do we ever really know our children?

'What would you do if your teenage son was stabbed to death at school?' That's a question chat-show host Carrie Kent can well imagine posing to any one of her studio guests. Her daily morning TV show deals with real life in all it's grubby glory - from underage sex to benefit swindlers, cheating partners to DNA testing. It's a million miles away from her perfect, polished existence. But when she gets a call to say that her beloved son Max has been murdered, Carrie and her ex-husband Brody will have to enter a world of poverty, fear and violence if they want to find out what really happened. And when the shocking truth is finally revealed, will they be able to live with it...?

My Review - 3 1/2 More Sugar Please

Sam Hayes is the mystery author version of Kristin Hannah and Jodi Picoult combined.  This book had everything, mystery, coming of age, parenting issues, bullying, violence...... all pulling on your emotions.  I think this is the perfect book for lovers of YA that want to try an adult novel or adults that enjoy fiction and want to venture into mystery.

Carrie was the most selfish, naive, foolish celebrity mom ever, she totally irritated me, I was unable to sympathise or have empathy for her.  She was a 'good' provider because she had the money, but was totally clueless and lacked the emotions needed to be a mom.  She considers herself to have the perfect life so when she is struck with having to deal head on with her life, her family she couldn't handle it.  She is a celebrity host, think trashy reality tv host type.  Her life becomes the guest she has on her show, sad reality.  I do think losing her son will make her a more genuine celebrity host.  In one scene she is talking to her son and says 'well I don't want to make you late for school' not realising Max had started vacation, 10 days in, how is that possible, unbelievable.  The perfect title 'Someone Else's Son'.

You know the feeling you have when watching children of different colour, race, culture playing with each other, completely immune to the prejudices of the world..... Max and Dayna had this with each other.  I loved their friendship, the hard and the great, not really knowing each other but loving each other for who they presented themselves to be.

It made you think about possible reasons Carrie and Brody divorced, the genuine love and then allowing prejudices to get in the way maybe.....  I felt like it was the apple that didn't fall from the tree.  They never admitted to failing each other which in the long run made them fail Max in the parenting aspect.
I liked Brody but would have liked to understand him more, why he did the things he did.

This was the perfect quote for the book.

She thought back to when it was the three of them:  Brody, her, Max.  A happy family.

What were they now?  Blind, divorced, dead.

If you enjoy sad emotional reads with a touch of mystery you will love this one.  It was told in parts, the Incident, the Past and a year before the incident, leading up.

My first experience with Sam Hayes was her book Tell Tell which I loved, my review is here.

Sam Hayes has offered to have giveaways of both of her books during Thrill Week.  Hope you come out to participate.

Interesting Book Titles - Blog Hop

Thanks for visiting Tea Time with Marce

When you are in the mood and have time for networking, a fun way would be to participate in the Blog Hop over at Jennifer blog Crazy for Books.

Are you a book blogger? Are you a reader? Then welcome to the place where all of us connect over the weekend and chat about books!

“Let’s talk crazy book titles! Highlight one or two (or as many as you like!) titles in your personal collection that have the most interesting titles! If you can’t find any, feel free to find one on the internet!”

Crazy, interesting or both.

If a stranger asked what are you reading, I would love to know their thoughts going through their head when I say, I am not a Serial Killer, lol

Now that can be labeled as a crazy title.  Maybe i'll be labeled also.

I haven't read this one yet but look forward to it, I consider this an interesting title.

Book Summary from Amazon

The acclaimed author of the groundbreaking bestseller Schoolgirls reveals the dark side of pink and pretty: the rise of the girlie-girl, she warns, is not that innocent.

Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source—the source—of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.

But, realistically, how many times can you say no when your daughter begs for a pint-size wedding gown or the latest Hannah Montana CD? And how dangerous is pink and pretty anyway—especially given girls' successes in the classroom and on the playing field? Being a princess is just make-believe, after all; eventually they grow out of it. Or do they? Does playing Cinderella shield girls from early sexualization—or prime them for it? Could today's little princess become tomorrow's sexting teen? And what if she does? Would that make her in charge of her sexuality—or an unwitting captive to it?

Review - I Don't Want to Kill You by Dan Wells

Currently Reading

Book Summary

Dan Wells introduced us to John Wayne Cleaver in the chilling novels I Am Not a Serial Killer and Mr. Monster. In I Don't Want to Kill You, Cleaver faces his toughest challenge yet.

John Wayne Cleaver has called a demon---literally called it on the phone---and challenged it to a fight. He’s faced two monsters already, barely escaping with his life, and now he’s done running; he’s taking the fight to them. As he wades through the town’s darkest secrets, searching for any sign of who the demon might be, one thing becomes all too clear: in a game of cat and mouse with a supernatural killer, you are always the mouse.

I Don't Want to Kill You brings his story to a thundering climax of suspicion, mayhem, and death.

It’s time to punish the guilty.

And in a town full of secrets, everyone is guilty of something.

My Review - 4 Great to the last Drop

Let me start off by saying this Trilogy is amazing, gets 5 stars from me, 2 thumbs up.  I love stand alones but Dan Wells, I want more.......  I think he will continue and make this a series.

I proclaimed my love for John after completing Mr. Monster, lol, in love with a sociopath, HA, but seriously his character is a knock out, my favourite for the year hands down.  And if you enjoy character driven books, this one gave you that, we were able to get to know more about others in this one.  My favourite is that we got to understand the serial killer in this horror.  I continued to be distracted with who, what, how many etc when trying to figure out the serial killer and was very pleased when we are given those details.

I Don't Want to Kill You was not as edgy as the others, I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat but I completely enjoyed the ride.  I am still wow'd by this trilogy and think all horror/thriller fans should read them.  The wrap up of the story completely made sense to me, sad, but I got it, great conclusion but with enough opener to continue if he wants.

These books made me realise my next career move - I'm going to become a Psychological Profiling Detective, lol.  Seriously, I wish I could start again, that would be fascinating.

Here is a teaser that allows you to understand John - Dead bodies are calm and silent - perfectly still, perfectly harmless.  A corpse will never move, it will never laugh, and it will never judge.  A corpse will never shout at you, hit you , or leave you.  Far away from the zombies and junk that you see on TV, a corpse is actually the perfect friend.  The perfect pet.  I feel more comfortable with them than I do with real people.

Friday Finds

From Publishers Weekly

A colorful lawyer and a cop killing are at the center of this skillfully crafted narrative look at the Murder Task Force of Chicago's public defender's office. A veteran crime reporter, Davis focuses on the case of Aloysius Oliver, a 26-year-old ex-convict charged with fatally shooting undercover police officer Eric Lee. In sharp journalistic prose, Davis portrays a variety of public defenders driven by idealism, ambition and the excitement of legal battles. At the heart of this story is Oliver's lawyer, Marijane Placek, an excellent lawyer and a character who loves "high profile, seemingly impossible cases" like a cop killing. Placek views the court as a stage where she performs before a hostile audience. Despite her best efforts to prove that Oliver's confession was coerced with physical abuse, that he didn't know Lee was a police officer and did not intend to fire his weapon, the jury found him guilty; the judge gave him life without parole. Davis ably captures the drama of the courtroom and makes a powerful case for the necessity of the often unpopular public defenders within the criminal justice system, conveying their dedication to obtaining justice for their clients.

I keep telling myself no more YA books but this one got my attention when participating in Top 10 Tuesday, Topic - Tackle Tough Subjects.

Book Summary from Amazon

Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives--and the way they understand each other so completely--has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.

Have a great weekend.

Incorrect spelling from Teacher - What would you do?

I would appreciate your opinion........

I have a 4 year old daughter who loves to go to school, doing flashcards, reading books, etc. Paige has been going to this school for over a year but will be going to Preschool in September.

Note, this is not to come down on the school because for me, it is more important for Paige to be happy at school then for some of the things I think they could do better, like SPELL.

This is the issue.  Each week they send a Weekly Schedule home of what the children will be doing and Swimming is spelled like this.....

SWIMING

The first week I notice but i'm ok with a mistake, once, twice, ugggh but every week. By 5, I have had it.

I nicely write a note on top of page "I have noticed that Swimming has been misspelled often.  Just a friendly reminder swimming has 2 m's."

I go in and the teacher I assumed made the errors was not there so I tell the teacher that is in charge of Finances.  She laughed :-0  and says, oh that's Teacher P's way of spelling.

ME - It is every week though.

TEACHER - We notice it.

ME - I don't want to see this every week and not tell her how to correct it. We learn every day, it is ok.

I start to walk away and she then says, do you want this.  HELLO, I wrote a note and the correction on it, give it to the other teacher!!!!!!!

I take it and throw it in the trash, i'm totally baffled.  Is she laughing at her boss behind her back or just fed up because she has said it and no change, sigh.

What would you do?  Try again directly to the teacher that made the mistake or just be happy that its only another month before Paige goes to real school - teacher's with a teaching degree or certification?

Review - The Kid by Sapphire

Book Summary

In The Kid bestselling author Sapphire tells the electrifying story of Abdul Jones, the son of Push’s unforgettable heroine, Precious.

A story of body and spirit, rooted in the hungers of flesh and of the soul, The Kid brings us deep into the interior life of Abdul Jones. We meet him at age nine, on the day of his mother’s funeral. Left alone to navigate a world in which love and hate sometimes hideously masquerade, forced to confront unspeakable violence, his history, and the dark corners of his own heart, Abdul claws his way toward adulthood and toward an identity he can stand behind.

In a generational story that moves with the speed of thought from a Mississippi dirt farm to Harlem in its heyday; from a troubled Catholic orphanage to downtown artist’s lofts, The Kid tells of a twenty- first-century young man’s fight to find a way toward the future. A testament to the ferocity of the human spirit and the deep nourishing power of love and of art, The Kid chronicles a young man about to take flight. In the intimate, terrifying, and deeply alive story of Abdul’s journey, we are witness to an artist’s birth by fire.

My Review - 2 Not my Cup of Tea

I read Push last year and was looking forward to a sequel, well this definitely wasn't the story I was waiting on.  Reading this book can scar you for life.  This is a tragic slap ass story that will scald you and enter your mind with details you do not want to have to think about.

I often love the gritty story lines that share some of the real genuine abuse issues, they open my eyes to something I cannot dream about and most times make me feel like doing something to help.  I loved Precious in Push because she was optimistic, she pushed her way through so why would I think she ended up with a psychopath son, he totally was out of control in every way imaginable.  She must have been looking down from heaven and had non stop tears.  He had some crazy psychotic thoughts, really mad man, as he said 'wack shit' thoughts.  I wanted to feel sorry for him and see him along his journey but it was so hard to read, I felt like I was watching a man get electrocuted and could feel some of the pain but was still disgusted with him.

Precious named her son Abdul, but he went by JJ, Jamal, Crazy Horse, it just went on and on, he had no identity, he was not Precious child in my eyes, she would not produce such, ugggh, I won't judge.  I hate to say it but I wish this was a memoir, this way it would be real to me.  I didn't even feel like the same author wrote these books.  I think Sapphire may have used many peoples experiences and wrapped it in one, Abdul, which ended up being a nightmare walking the streets.

I loved Precious and wanted to know more about her life with her children but the story started out with her funeral, ok, this is real life, I didn't like but fine.  Abdul learns about his sister and just that she is dead, I wish there had been more.  After his abusive live in school, giving and taking abuse, he was taken to his great grandma who he knows nothing about.  His grandma is discussing her history with him, way to much detail again and the craziest, most disgusting, shocking, complete utter bull happens. (Be warned, TMI, but I have to say it.  Abdul masturbates and comes on the kitchen table :-0 yes, notice your reaction, sigh)

I have been reading this one for over a week, it truly is the hardest book I have ever read.  I finally decided to give up at page 246 and skim the rest.  Push had illiterate writing and it improved throughout the story, it was executed amazingly and added to the genuineness of the story.  I felt like The Kid was all over the place.  His dreams, what is reality, what isn't, he seems educated but then has this comprehension that is just so wrong.  I found all of this very distracting and I hated the style, but feel like I should give Sapphire her props for being able to do it.

Push gave you hope and I was waiting to experience this in The Kid and it never came, very depressing read.  I don't know what I got out of it so I don't know how to recommend to anyone.  I will recommend Push to others though, it was graphic but not in a shocking inappropriate way.

I did enjoy that Abdul lost himself in African dance and then other dance forms.  All the nightmares, panic attacks, tragedy in his life, kind of disappeared.  Even though those around him could tell he was releasing pain.  This was a great part of his story.

I don't usually write this much but his story honestly impacted me in a way I could have done without and I want to make sure I have shared enough information for you to make a decision, be warned.

I have to thank Trish from TLC BookTours.  I wanted to read this after Push so I am disappointed I didn't like it but am grateful for the opportunity.

Joining the Read-a-thon for IT by Stephen King

Stephen King is my brothers favourite author, I don't know why I haven't picked them up to read.  I have only read the Tom Gordon one which wasn't what I expected so I'm going to join this Read-a-thon and experience the rush and hopefully the scare.

Below is from Anna's blog, Diary of an Eccentric .........

Despite my intense dislike for clowns — especially creepy looking ones — Serena somehow managed to convince me to read Stephen King’s IT.  Actually, she bought the book for me for Christmas and pretty much told me I HAD to read it with her.

Anyway, we decided to hold a read-a-long later this year, and we want to invite you all to join us.  The read-a-long will begin in August (we’ll post a reminder, so don’t worry!) and end in December.  The book has 5 parts, and we’ll be reading one part (plus the interlude following) each month.

Here’s the reading schedule:

Aug. 24 — discussion on part 1 to be held on Savvy Verse & Wit
Sept. 28 — discussion on part 2 to be held on Diary of an Eccentric
Oct. 31 — discussion on part 3 to be held on Savvy Verse & Wit
Nov. 30 — discussion on part 4 to be held on Diary of an Eccentric
Dec. 21 — discussion on part 5 to be held on Savvy Verse & Wit

We hope you will consider joining us!  You can bet I’ll do all of my reading of this book during the daylight hours.  Thanks, Monica, for the awesomely creepy button!
